About

a. What is the program about?

The Impact Science Bootcamp taking place on November 17-18, 2023 was organized by LMU Munich together with Uni Augsburg, and the Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML). The overview of both previous Impact Bootcamps can be found here:

b. Benefits for the participants

With this two-day event, we aim to introduce researchers and students to an entrepreneurial mindset. Drawing on insights from experts and incorporating practical experiences, we aim to emphasize both the opportunities and challenges associated with a career as a founder and entrepreneur in comparison to a research-oriented career path.

c. Program goals

This edition of our event aims to unlock the potential of startups utilizing AI to ensure food security. But what is food security exactly? According to the 1996 World Food Summit: “Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.”

Our keynote speakers are AI researchers, entrepreneurs, startup founders and members of the World Food Programme. While the first part offers insights through keynotes and discussion, the second day challenges participants to develop their own ideas leveraging AI to ensure food safety, quality, supply, and avoidance of food waste. At the end of the day, the groups will pitch their startup ideas to our highly qualified jury from industry and university.

Content

The two-day impACTup! Bootcamp empowered aspiring entrepreneurs with startup coaching, peer interaction, and the true essence of innovation at IEC.

The first day of “AI meets Entrepreneur: Impact Bootcamp towards food security & nutrition” took place on 17th of November at the Freskensaal of LMU Munich. Our highly esteemed guest speakers—Prof. Albrecht Schmidt, Dr. Thomas Meier, Prof. Florian Zabel, and Prof. Stefan Feuerriegel—highlighted the urgency of addressing food wastage from both geographic and social perspectives for a sustainable future. They emphasized integrating AI and machine learning tools into future entrepreneurial ideas; an essential component of Munich startup eco system now. Adding to the inspiration, co-founders Martin Patz and Jan Bodenbach, leaders of Fungtional and HospiChef respectively, shared their invaluable startup experiences in the food industry, igniting motivation among our students. Following these enriching sessions, students delved into brainstorming their ideas, forming teams for Day 2 where they pitched their innovative concepts, taking crucial steps toward launching their impactful entrepreneurial journeys!

The second day of the Impact Bootcamp took place in Netlight office.

During that day, teams had ample time to develop and pitch their solutions for food security to the jury. Intense competition among teams exhibited brilliant ideas, and all the participants received expert guidance on structuring their ideas for impact. The winning team secured an opportunity to further develop their entrepreneurial vision with IEC’s support.
