As the European Commission moves to ease key sustainability regulations, Prof. Dr. Ali Gümüşay joins other scholars in voicing serious concerns.
The European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) – a key part of its Green Deal – will require importers to pay for the carbon emissions of certain goods like steel and cement. This aims to prevent “carbon leakage” and push global climate standards.
Prof. Dr. Ali Aslan Gümüsay, professor at LMU Munich, is part of the research team analyzing the wider impact of this policy. Their study highlights the mechanism’s potential to drive sustainable change – but also warns of risks for developing countries that may struggle to comply.
Gümüsay emphasizes the need for fair implementation, including support for less developed nations. Without such measures, the policy could deepen global inequality despite its environmental ambition.
The study is part of the international project "Sustainability and Competition" and has been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
